New Budget, Computers and Teachers

BROCKWAY- The Brockway Area School Board met
in special session on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 for the final adoption of the
budget for the 2014-15 school year in the amount of $14,343,124 and to close
out business for the 2013-14 fiscal year that ends on June 30.
General fund monies for the 2014-15 school
year will be invested with S & T Bank, First Commonwealth Bank, PA School
District Liquid Asset Fund, PA Local Government Investment Trust, Citizens
Bank, Financial Northeastern Co., MultiBank Securities, Inc., and Farmers
Approval was given for the purchase of 52
computers for the high school library and room 213 lab through the CoStars contract
system in the amount of $19,059.00; and 75 computers to replace the three high
school mobile labs through the state contract system in the amount of
$25,834.00. The annual budgeted donation
of $5,000 was made to the Brockway Mengle Memorial Public Library.
The commercial insurance package, boiler and
machinery umbrella, and school liability policy was renewed with the PSBA
Insurance Trust through Swift-Kennedy Insurance Group for the coming year. The PSBA endorsed Student Accident Program
was also approved to include all athletic sports programs in grades 7-12
including the band and cheer leaders at a cost of $5,144.00. Voluntary student insurance will also be
available at $30 per year for school-time coverage and $116 for 24-hour
In personnel matters, a vacancy in the
English Department will be filled by Andrew Bundy, currently from Marietta, PA;
and Tom Bussard of St. Marys was approved as a health and physical education
teacher. Several other staff vacancies
will come up after school opens in the fall. Dana Esposito was hired as Reading Department Head, and approval was
given for Danette Foradori to take a leave of absence from her part-time aide
position to work as a temporary secretary beginning July 1st.
In the high school, morning hall duty will be
handled by John Barrow, Robin Brinkley, Terri Fleeger, Jon Toney, and Zach
Weaver; Michele Rhed in the elementary. Brad Martino will monitor morning detention. Resignations have been received from Lori
Stuart as Student Assistance Coordinator, and from Jennifer Boleen as
Anti-Bullying Committee Advisor.
Upon the recommendation of Varsity
Cheerleading Advisor Mallory Coulter, the following were named to her staff:
Amy Buesink and Ashley Butters as Varsity Assistants, Lyndsey Kepner and Angela
Buffone for Junior High. In Girls’
Basketball under Dick Esposito, the staff will consist of Sarah Esposito as
Assistant, Kevin Carnahan as Varsity Assistant, Steve Buttery for Junior
Varsity Coach, and Dave Koehler for Elementary.
Crystal Powell was approved as head coach for
Junior High Volleyball; David Britten was assistant coach for Junior High
Soccer; Josh Wrighter and Gabe Bemenic as volunteer coaches in the cross
country program. Matt Holt was named as
a volunteer assistant for the agriculture program and the greenhouse.
Approval was given for a summer music program
consisting of a mini-camp on July 2-3 from 8:00 a.m. until noon to prepare for
the 4th of July; a morning concert and marching in the parade on the
4th of July; and mini-camps on July 30-August 1 from 8:00 a.m. until
noon and on August 4-8 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. These camps will be set up by Band Director
Kevin Rush, Colorguard and Drill Team Instructor Kim Salada, Instructors Nancy
Hills and Justin Salada, and Drill Designer Michael Young.
Approval was given for the following marching
band schedule for the fall of 2014: The
Oil City Marching Band Festival on September 13; St. Marys Competition on
September 27; Tyrone Competition on October 4; and the Chapter Championships at
I.U.P. Stadium on October 18.
Recognition was given to Ray Reckner, retired
Brockway teacher, coach, and athletic director who was inducted to the
Pennsylvania Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 14, 2014 in
Harrisburg; and to Mackenzie Bart, a 2011 Brockway graduate who was crowned
Miss Ohio on Saturday, June 21, 2014 in Mansfield, Ohio where she has been
living and attending college. She will
compete for the title of Miss America in Atlantic City on September 14, 2014.
The directors decided to cancel the
previously scheduled board meeting on July 8th since there are no
major projects under construction this year and regular maintenance is going
well. The next meeting of the Brockway
Area School Board is now scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in
the Educational Service Center at the Elementary School.
