Pa. AG Vows to Monitor Altoona Hospital Takeover
July 3, 2013
HARRISBURG (AP) - Pennsylvania Attorney
General Kathleen Kane says she'll watch closely to ensure that a dispute
between the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Highmark Inc. does not
interfere with patients' access to a central Pennsylvania health system that
UPMC has taken over.
Kane said Tuesday she won't object to the
affiliation between UPMC and the Altoona Regional Health System.
But she says 60 percent of Blair County
residents who have insurance are Highmark subscribers and that it would be
unfair for anyone to be shut out of the Altoona system because of the
Highmark-UPMC dispute. She says UPMC and Highmark must work out an agreement
that guarantees access to UPMC Altoona.
In announcing the takeover Monday, UPMC pledged
to invest more than $250 million in the Altoona system over ten years.
