PennDOT Announces Bridge Replacement Project for Jefferson County

August 16, 2013

Indiana PennDOT District 10 announced today that funding has been secured for the replacement of the bridge carrying Route 949 over Clear Creek in Heath Township, Jefferson County.

The bridge, near Clear Creek State Park, was damaged in the flooding on June 27 and has been closed since that date.  This bridge, built in 1950, carries approximately 275 vehicles per day, predominantly into Clear Creek State Park.

District 10 personnel have been working on securing funding for the estimated $1 million to $3 million emergency bridge replacement project since the bridge closed. The funding has been secured and preliminary engineering has begun on the project. It is anticipated that a construction contract will be in place and work will begin before the end of this year.

PennDOT is hopeful that the new bridge will offer service to Clear Creek State Park by the 2014 Fourth of July holiday.  Late-season bridge construction offers challenges, due to weather, and more concrete information will become available once the bridge is designed.
