DuBois Sleep Center Receives Accreditation

August 20, 2013
DuBOIS- DuBois Regional Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center in DuBois recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, or AASM.

DuBois Regional Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center is directed by Dr. Angelo Illuzzi. It treats all patients with sleep disorders, including patients of the Sleep Disorders Lab at DRMC West. This includes diagnoses such as obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, complex sleep apnea, Cheyne-Stokes breathing, narcolepsy, periodic limb movements of sleep, restless leg syndrome, parasomnias, circadian rhythm disorders and insomnia.

“Achieving AASM accreditation is a testament to the dedication of the entire Sleep Medicine staff and DRMC to treating these common disorders and improving the health and quality of life of our patients,” Illuzzi said.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine and is the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers.

To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates DuBois Regional Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center on meeting the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. M. Safwan Badr, AASM president. “DuBois Regional Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center is an important resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”
