Smith Comments on State Grants Received by Local Vo-Tech Schools
January 6, 2014
HARRISBURG – House Speaker Sam Smith (R-Jefferson/Armstrong/Indiana) issued the following statement after learning today that two local vocational-technical schools received $92,500 in state grant funding to purchase equipment.

“These state grants are awarded annually through a competitive process to help vo-tech schools secure state-of-the-art equipment,” Smith said. “This funding is critical because it allows schools to purchase the same equipment industries use in order to give students the hands-on experience needed for the jobs of today. The importance of these technical programs cannot be stressed enough in terms of preparing our young people to be competitive in the workforce and able to secure good-paying jobs. I was a huge advocate for this funding in this year’s state budget and it’s encouraging to see some of these funds being returned to our communities.”

The Jefferson County-Dubois Area Vocational-Technical School received a $42,500 grant and the Lenape Technical School in Armstrong County received a $50,000 grant. Each of these schools serves students that reside in the 66th Legislative District.
