Man Dies in Kayaking Accident

BURNSIDE TOWNSHIP- A man died while Kayaking over the weekend in Clearfield County. Punxsutawney state police said they responded to a water rescue in progress along Route 219 in Burnside Township.On March 1, 48 year old, Edward Aaron Heberling Jr., of Westover PA, was in the West branch of the Susquehanna when his kayak tipped him over and he was thrown into the swift moving, freezing water.
 
Rescue crews were unable to see him because ice covered the river in the area of the accident. Heberling was discovered about 45 minutes later about 100 yards downstream from where the kayak tipped. Rescue workers tried to revive him and he was taken to Conemaugh hospital in Johnstown by air lift but efforts were unsuccessful and he could not be revived.

State Police thanked all the agencies involved for their assistance at the scene. State Police were assisted by the Westover Fire Department, Cherry Tree Fire Department, Burnside Fire Department, Sandy Township Fire Department, Treasure Lake Fire Rescue, Jackson Township Ice Rescue, Grampian Fire Department, Curwensville Fire Department, Citizens Ambulance and Mahaffey Ambulance.
