German Students in Brockway

April 9, 2014- John Pozza
BROCKWAY- The Brockway Area School District is hosting 18 students from Germany as part of the district's annual German-American Partnership Program.

The students arrived in Brockway on Saturday and are staying with host families as part of a cross-cultural program organized by German teacher Eric Stawecki. A contingent of 13 Brockway students will return the favor in June by traveling to Germany and staying with host families there.

Following an executive session for personnel, the board hired Eric Grecco as Brockway's new head wrestling coach for next year. Grecco succeeds former coach Randy Loudon.

Elementary teacher Mary Beth Yahner was recognized for her selection as one of 13 finalists for this year's Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year award. It's the fourth time in the past five years a Brockway teacher has been selected.

The board approved May 21 as the date of the all-sports banquet to be held this year in the school cafeteria. The banquet will feature guest speaker Cael Sanderson, head coach of the national champion Penn State wrestling team. May 30 was also set as the date for this year's commencement.

Also approved was an 8 percent increase to Brockway's share of the Jeff Tech budget for next year. It amounts to a little over $65,000 or about $5,000 per student.
