College Access and Affordability

April 18, 2014 - Don Rooney
HARRISBURG- As college becomes more expensive, it is harder, if not impossible, for underprivileged students from low income working families to continue their education after graduating from high school. The Senate Democratic Policy Committee held a roundtable discussion at Cheyney University to examine possible solutions to this problem. Senator Williams says the discussion brought out a few points he thinks are worth exploring:

● Spending at colleges always seems to outpace the revenue taken

in. Colleges and universities always seem to operate at a deficit no matter how much tuition is raised or state funding is increased.

● Banks and other lending institutions seem to be backing away

from providing student loans, leaving it up to the federal government

● Enrollment at colleges and universities is down, even at more

affordable state colleges.
