Q&A with Brittany
GROWING UP: I grew up just outside of Grampian, Pa. in Irishtown. I’m the youngest of four kids, and there’s a big age difference between me and my siblings. There were always plenty of people looking after me, and there was always tons of room to run around! My parents now have Madera’s Greenhouse and Blueberries in Grampian.
I was absolutely the biggest nerd (and probably still am). I loved school and always carried a book with me. (I was such an avid reader that I actually tried to read while riding a bike… which didn’t end well.) Name any nerdy hobby and I was probably interested into it at one point. Even though I was a strange little kid, I was generally sweet and friendly and had a close group of friends.
GETTING INTO RADIO: I went to IUP for Journalism, and I learned so much about news writing from the fantastic faculty who work there. I assumed I’d go into print media, but I started exploring radio once I realized how much I loved spoken word via podcasts and radio programs. I especially love NPR and the How Stuff Works podcasts.
I was fresh out of college when I started at my first radio job at Renda Broadcasting in Indiana, Pa. I knew right away that I wanted to continue being in the radio industry and stay on-air. It’s a nice way to mix my love for spoken word with my nosiness about news and local events.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Since I’ve only been in radio for a few years, I hope that most of my career highlights are yet to come!
FUNNY RADIO STORY: I did a remote broadcast from inside of a hot air balloon once! There was an event for a RE/MAX grand opening, so they were giving free rides in the RE/MAX balloon. It was so exciting to be able to do a report from hundreds of feet in the air, but I was SOOO nervous! My legs were shaking the entire time. I have a recording of my broadcast from up in the air, and you can hear in my voice exactly how nervous I was. I always overestimate how brave I am! I sign up to do scary things and then have second thoughts (though I usually go through with it anyway).
ONE PERSON IN HISTORY YOU’D LIKE TO MEET: Just one?! I’d love to meet everyone. If I have to pick, then probably either Kurt Vonnegut or Hunter S. Thompson.
THREE DINNER GUESTS: Am I cooking for them? If so, we’ll have to find three people who are easy to impress because I’m not a great cook.
FAVORITE SINGER OR GROUP: I really do like just about anything, but there’s a special place in my heart for the late ’90s and early ’00s songs I grew up with. My now-husband, Jeremy, and I used to go to tons of ska/punk/folk concerts. Some of my favorite bands include Streetlight Manifesto, The Decemberists, Jack Johnson, Neutral Milk Hotel, Reel Big Fish, Andrew Jackson Jihaad and They Might Be Giants.
FAVORITE TV SHOWS: The Office, Arrested Development, King of the Hill, Bob’s Burgers… I also LOVE any documentaries, especially those by Louis Theroux, Lisa Ling or Morgan Spurlock. Louis Theroux is my absolute favorite though.
WORDS TO LIVE BY: “Oh my God, what if you wake up some day, and you’re 65, or 75, and you never got your memoir or novel written; or you didn’t go swimming in warm pools and oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life, of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like when you were a kid? It’s going to break your heart. Don’t let this happen.” – Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird
FAVORITE FOOD: Anything with potatoes or cheese
BEVERAGE OF CHOICE: Iced tea if it’s hot outside or Earl Grey (black, no sugar) if it’s cold outside
HOBBIES: Podcasts (I have one of my own too!), reading, writing, my dogs and cats and chinchilla, talking with people, travelling and exploring when I get the chance
LIFE GOAL: Leave this world at least a slightly better place than I found it.
GREATEST FEAR: I wouldn’t call this a “fear” exactly, but I am really grossed out by bandaids and tape. I also hate it when people touch their eyeballs.
CHARITY OF CHOICE: Rotary or BPW, but I fall in love with just about any charity I hear about.
SOMETHING THAT WOULD SURPRISE SUNNY 106 FANS: I got married in October 2015 in a helicopter hovering above the Canadian side of Niagara Falls! I’ve never broken a bone or had my ears pierced.
