The 4H club welcomes youth ages 8-18 years old. Club founder and leader Teddy Klark, of DuBois, has the help of adult volunteer leaders Gabby Orcutt and Meghan Hess.
Klark said that the three homesteaders joined forces and learned all about the 4H program together.
Hence the 4H club’s mission statement, which is “raising the next generation to have the confidence and excitement of being self-sufficient, while understanding the importance of community involvement.”
The idea is to have youth focus on hands-on and outdoor homesteading activities that will help them be self-sustaining in the future.
Currently, the DuBois Community Homesteaders 4H Club has 22 members.
The club’s current two-tier project involves growing and donating fresh produce to the DuBois Food Pantry. For example, said Klark, some youth in the club are raising chickens, and donating eggs to the pantry about every two weeks.
“We’ve donated 13 dozen eggs so far already,” he said.
The second part of the project is community and individual gardens, which involve the youth raising fresh produce and delivering it monthly during the harvest season.
